Erin is a single woman in her 20's with Downs Syndrome. She has had problems with bullying in her neighbourhood. She is
feeling increasingly isolated due to not wanting to leave the house and she is afraid to open her front door. The police are aware of the issues and have created a case log to record any more issues so they can build a case. Erin contacted Carelink at the recommendation of the police and explained the situation. Carelink suggested a lifeline and pendant so Erin can summon help if anything happens and Carelink can report to the police on her behalf, especially if it is happening at the time. She is able to press the button before answering the door to ensure she has help available just in case. Carelink also suggested welfare calls once or twice a week so that Erin had somebody to talk to, to limit her isolation.
Erin received two welfare calls a week in the beginning, but this soon dropped to once a week as she was feeling better in herself. Erin has said not only have the calls helped but knowing she can press a button at any time has filled her with more confidence when it comes to going in her garden and opening the door.
Ava, a lady in her 80's, lives alone and is a heavy smoker, she also had a hearing impairment. On more than one occasion Ava has fallen asleep with a cigarette in her hand. Usually she wakes when the cigarette drops, but she is afraid she won't hear the smoke alarm and her family share her concerns. They contacted Carelink to enquire about smoke detectors because they felt having the control room alerted when the smoke alarm activates might put their minds at ease. An alarm was fitted and Ava practiced talking and listening to the control room. Due to her hearing impairment she sometimes struggled to hear the operator so it was decided if everything was well she would say 'okay' several times however if the operator couldn't get a response, they would contact the fire brigade.
Erin enjoys the peace of mind the linked smoke detector offers her and her family. She has had a couple of instances where the fire brigade have needed to be called and thinks it's wonderful that she is able to get the help without the need to dial 999 herself.
Lia had a lifeline installed for her family's peace of mind after she had a fall and spent the night on the floor. Several times over the next few years the family were called to help Lia up off the floor after a fall. Recently they've noticed that the falls are more frequent, and her memory isn't as sharp. They've found medication on the side days after it should have been taken and received calls from neighbours saying Lia was knocking on their door at 3am. The family spoke to Carelink, who advised speaking to Adult Social Care to see whether any help could be given to support Lia and her family. Carelink later received a referral to add a pill dispenser, impact detector and door contacts to Lia's existing lifeline alarm.
Since having additional equipment fitted, Lia's family have expressed that they feel less pressure and can therefore have happier visits with Lia. They know they will get a call if she falls, forgets her medication or opens her door at night. Lia says it's nice to chat with someone regularly and have them remind her to take her medication or stay inside.
